Biography
I lost my father as a child. He graduated from the University of Chile , received a specialty "teacher of Spanish language." In 1971 - 1972 he studied in Iowa , received a master's degree. After the 1973 military coup, he was arrested and imprisoned. After liberation in 1974 he left for the USA. Received a doctorate from the University of Maryland , became a professor at the University of Iowa . Author of books on a fantastic novel in Latin American literatures, monographs on Vicente Widobro .

Recognition
Corresponding Member of the Chilean Academy of Language ( 1991 ). Winner of numerous awards, including the National Book Board Award ( 2006 ), the Ibero-American Poetic Prize of Pablo Neruda ( 2011 ), the Chilean National Prize for Literature ( 2012 ).
