USS Groton (SSN-694) is an American submarine of the Los Angeles project , the seventh in a row in this class (in chronological order). This is the third ship named after the city of Groton .

The construction contract was signed by General Dynamics in Groton , Connecticut on January 31, 1971, and its keel was laid on August 3, 1973 . The first descent took place on October 9, 1976 in the presence of a sponsor, Elliot Richardson, and entered service from July 8, 1978 . R.V. Vogel was appointed captain.
Groton set off on his first overseas deployment in March 1980 in the Indian Ocean . The submarine returned back to the port of Groton through the Panama Canal . Groton completed this campaign in October 1980.
Groton was decommissioned and deleted from the marine registries of ships on November 7, 1997 .
