History
The city was founded in 1910, and named after Martinus Tunis Stein , the last president of the independent Orange Free State .
During the apartheid years, black people could not settle next to the whites, and therefore Matlwangwang, which formally is a separate settlement, grew up on the other side of the highway.
Population
According to the 2001 census, 1,192 people lived in Stainsrews, of which 847 were white (Boers), while 6,441 people lived in Matlwangwang, 6408 of whom were black.
