General Information
The election of the venue for the championship was held on May 29, 2008 in Cape Town . Schladming, who lost the German Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the fight for the 2011 World Cup , this time ahead of the other three applicants.
11 sets of awards were played: men and women identified the strongest in downhill, super giant, giant slalom, slalom and super combination, as well as medals in the team championship (mixed discipline for men and women). Disciplines were held in the same order as at the 2011 World Cup.
Already in the first start of the championship on the supergiant track, the famous American Lindsey Vonn received a serious injury to the right knee. As a result, the 2012/13 season ended for her, it took about 6 months to recover [1] . Due to the effects of the injury, Vonn was forced to miss the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi .
The day after the incident with Vonn after falling on the super giant track, the Norwegian Kjetil Jansrud suffered a knee injury, who was also forced to miss the rest of the 2012/13 season [2] .
Norwegian Axel Lund Svindal was not left without gold at the fourth consecutive world championships (2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013).
The hero of the championship was the 28-year-old American Ted Ligeti , who won three golds - super giant, super combination and giant slalom (in the last discipline, Ted defended his 2011 title). Ligety won more gold medals than any country in the championship. Ligeti became the first skier since 1968 to win at least three gold medals at one World Championship (in 1968, in Grenoble, 4 out of the 4 possible gold won by Jean-Claude Killy at the World Championships in the framework of the Olympic Games).
In terms of the total number of awards, the first place was taken by the Austrian hosts (8), while only on the last day of the championship did they win the only gold medal in personal discipline by the efforts of Marcel Hirscher .
The leader of the overall classification of the 2012/13 World Cup, Marcel Hirscher, in the end won two gold and one silver medal. Three medals (gold and two silver) were taken away from Schladming and the leader of the Slovenian women's World Cup, Tina Maze .
