1981 European Basketball Championships

The 22nd European Basketball Championship was held in Czechoslovakia from May 26 to June 5, 1981 . Semifinal and final matches were held in the sports palace in Prague , the preliminary stage matches were hosted by Bratislava (group “A”) and Gavirzhov (group “B”). The USSR national team became the champion for the 13th time [1] .

The formula of the tournament was changed again. 12 participating teams were divided into 2 preliminary groups, then semi-final games were held: the three best teams from each group played each other in the same round. There were no matches for the relegation : in the final, the 1st and 2nd teams met in the semifinal group tournament, in the match for bronze medals - 3rd and 4th.

Preliminaries

The winner of each match received two points, the loser did not receive points. The first three teams entered the final stage of the tournament, the last three teams took part in the qualification round.

According to the results of the tournament, the symbolic team included Valdis Valters , Anatoly Myshkin (both - the USSR ), Dragan Kichanovich ( Yugoslavia ), Stanislav Kropilak ( Czechoslovakia ) and Juan Domingo de la Cruz ( Spain ) [1] . The most useful player of the championship was named Valdis Valters, who received 91 votes of journalists, Dragan Kicanovich received 83 votes, Drazen Dalipagich (Yugoslavia) and Anatoly Myshkin - 43 votes each , Vladimir Tkachenko (USSR) - 32 votes [1] . The best in points scored on average for a game with an indicator of 23.1 was the Pole Mieczysław Mlynarski [2] .
