Licinii of Murena ( lat. Muraena ) - one of the lines of the Roman plebeian clan of the Licinius [1] .
Cognomen Murena appeared due to the lively fish-breeding cages with moray eels brought in by the praetor Lucius Licinius [1] .
The grandson of the first carrier of the cognomogen, Lucius Licinius Murena , in 86 BC. e. fought with Mithridates in Greece ; in 84, being the prophet of Asia , he arbitrarily started the Second Mithridates War (83-81), in which he was defeated. Sulla recalled him back. [1]
The son of the previous one, also Lucius , was for several years a legate of Lucullus in the Third Mithridates War . In 65 BC e. he was a praetor ; in 62, he was consul . In the same year he was accused of bribery, but thanks to the brilliant defense of Cicero, they were acquitted [1] . Perhaps the son of Lucius Licinius was Aulus Terence Varron Murena (he died in 22 BC).
Also known is Guy Licinius Murena , the younger brother of the consul 62 years BC. e., who in 64–62 served with his brother as a legate in Transalpine Gaul .
