Biography

Born in the city of Zhovkva in a Jewish family. In 1915-1919 he studied law at Lviv University .

In 1938-1955 - professor at Cambridge University .

In 1945-1946 Lauterpacht was a legal adviser to the American and British representatives of the Nuremberg trials .

In 1952-1954 - member of the UN International Law Commission , in 1955-1960 - judge of the UN International Court of Justice in The Hague .

One of the founders of modern international law: human rights, genocide, crimes against humanity.

The main idea of ​​his scientific activity was the implementation of international law in the relations of states. Lauterpacht is one of the authors of the concept of human rights as a norm of international law.

He was the initiator of the introduction into the UN Charter of a paragraph on the observance of human rights, as one of the fundamental goals of this organization.

In 1956 received the title of knight of Great Britain.

At the University of Cambridge, the created Center for International Law ( Lauterpacht Center for International Law ) is named after him.
