This bird is quite common in dry and wet deciduous forests, but not in tropical ones . The bird builds a cup-shaped nest on the tree, two cream and brown spots of the egg are laid and the hatch is completely incubated by the female for 20 days.

Like other manakin , the sharp-tailed red-legged manakin is a plump, bright forest bird, usually 13.5 cm in length and weighing 17.5 g. Representatives of both sexes have two central tail feathers , elongated in the form of thorns. Males are almost completely black, with a red spot on the crown, a bright sky-blue back and bright orange legs.

The female has an olive-green upper body and a somewhat pale, olive lower part. Young males are olive, but when they become adults, one can see a red cap and a blue beginning of the back.

This species is similar to the blue-spined red-legged manakin , nesting in the far south and east of South America, but the latter has no spines on the tail feathers, and the males have a somewhat dark blue back.

Males of red-footed manakin mackin have mating dances , which are unusual in that they are performed together and not for the sake of competition . Two males sit next to each other on a bare branch and jump in turn up and down, sometimes making short flights. Groups of birds can perform dances together on a different branch with each pair of tokens .

A sharp-tailed red-footed manakin has a number of voices, including toy-li-doo , curry-how, and buzzing caws like those of a frog issued by the current males.

These manakins feed on fruits and insects .
