Biography
Born in Grodno in the family of Berka (Dovber) Gimpelevich Iofe (1838-1902) and Khai-Lei Moishe-Fishelevna (nee Lapina, 1839-1923) [1] . Grandfather, Mordhe-Gimple Jofe, was a rabbi . He received a traditional Jewish education. He studied at the Volozhin yeshiva . In the period from 1897 to 1901 he studied philosophy at the universities of Heidelberg , Freiburg , Leipzig . Organized in Grodno youth group Hovevei Zion . In 1906, at the 3rd All-Russian Conference of Zionists in Helsingfors, he was elected a member of the Central Committee of the Zionist Organization from Vilna . At the 8th Zionist Congress, he was elected a member of the Executive Committee (held this post until 1911). In 1915-1917, together with Alexander Goldstein, he published the newspaper Jewish Life, and in 1917-1919 he was the editor-in-chief of the Safrut publishing house in Moscow . In 1917, after the death of Yehiel Chlenov, he was elected secretary of the Zionist organization in Moscow . In 1919 he was elected chairman of the Zionist Organization of Lithuania . He participated in the publication of the newspapers Letste Nayes, Yiddish Zeitung, and Hashavua in Vilna .
Together with V.F. Khodasevich, he compiled and published Safrut's Collection of Young Jewish Poetry (1918) at his publishing house Safrut; Interlinear translations for the collection were made by Haim Greenberg .
In 1920 he emigrated with his family to Eretz Yisrael . From 1920 - editor, in 1921-1922 - chief editor of the newspaper " Ha-Arets ". From 1926 until the end of his life, he served as director of the Keren A-Yesod Foundation in Jerusalem .
In 1948, Jaffe died in a bomb explosion planted by Arab terrorists in the building of the Jewish Agency in Jerusalem .

Perpetuation of memory
Streets in several cities of Israel are named after Leib Yaffe: in Jerusalem, in Be'er Sheva , in Netanya and in Ramat Gan [2] . His name is also called moshav Talmey Jaffe in the south of Israel [3] .
