Creation History

The film is based on the real story of a former doctor from Spain, , who in December 2004 rested in Thailand with her husband Enrique (Kike) and sons Lucas (12), Thomas (8) and Simon (5). All five survived the tsunami, but Mary lost half her leg and nearly died. She personally selected Naomi Watts (who was her favorite actress after Maria saw her in the film " 21 grams ") for the lead role, although the Bennet family depicted in the film is British, and spent a lot of time with her on the set, helping prepare for the role. Maria also worked a lot with the screenwriter Sergio G. Sanchez, making sure that her story was conveyed as accurately as possible. The film premiered on September 9, 2012, in Russia the film was released on February 14, 2013.

The slogan of the film: “Nothing is more powerful than the human spirit” (“Nothing beats the strength of the human spirit”).

Story

The film describes the events of 2004, when shortly before the tsunami, which claimed the lives of more than 200 thousand people, a family of five (parents and three sons) come to Thailand to rest. The element catches everyone by surprise.

The father of the Henry family ( Ewan McGregor ) is swimming in the pool with his two youngest sons. His wife Maria ( Naomi Watts ) reads a book, sitting on a deck chair. After a few moments, a powerful wave rolls over the tourists and, sweeping away everything in its path, takes away the heroes of the film with a muddy stream.

With inhuman efforts, Mary manages to emerge to the surface and grab onto the trunk of a tree. In a sweeping stream, she discovers her eldest son Lucas, rushes after him and saves him. Subsequently, they rescue the child from under the wreckage and wait for help on the tree. Locals find heroes and take to the hospital. During the move, the boy found under the wreckage lags behind Mary and Lucas. In the hospital, heroin is given first aid, but her condition is getting worse. She asks her son at least something to help people around. Lucas compiles a list of missing people and helps one man find his son. Returning to his mother, Lucas finds her bunk empty. A hospital worker takes him to a children's tent and glues a name sticker.

Henry and his two youngest sons survived and, together with the rest of the hotel, were waiting for help on the roof. By evening, cars arrive that will take people to a safe place. Henry refuses to go, because he wants to stay and look for his wife and eldest son. He sends the children along with friends and asks eight-year-old Thomas, the middle of his sons, to take care of the younger Simon. Searches do not lead to anything. In an exhausted state, Henry is taken to one of the points of salvation, where he shares his story. One of the survivors allows you to use your phone and offers to search for the missing members of their families together. Going around several points of rescue, Henry finds out that Simon and Thomas were taken from his friends and taken away with other children.

The action is again transferred to the hospital. Lucas is asked to identify things, but he is too scared and does not give exact answers. Then he is taken to his mother. It turns out that someone mixed up the cards of his mother and another patient. The boy notices the silhouette of his father, but he does not manage to catch up with him. His screams are heard by Simon and Thomas, whose car stopped briefly near the hospital. They recognize the voice of the elder brother and run towards him, and after them the father appears.

Mary's surgery is successful. The insurer sends the injured Maria Bennett, accompanied by her family, to Singapore to continue treatment. On the plane, Lucas tells his mother that while he was helping people, he saw a boy who they saved from the rubble, along with his father.
