Distribution and Ecology

Southern Gansu , Western Sichuan , Southeast Tibet .

It is found at altitudes of 2300–3900 meters above sea level. Humus-rich soils on rocky areas or wet moss-covered places on slopes covered with forest or shrubs, in forest glades, in forests with low tree density. Often forms large colonies [4] (up to 15-20 plants [5] ).

Pollinators are fruit flies Drosophila immigrans , Drosophila kikkawai and Drosophila robusta [6] .

Botanical Description

Herbaceous perennials 7–35 cm high. Stems are straight, bare, relatively short, 2-3 cm.

Rhizomes are thin, creeping.

The leaves are elliptical, 6-7 × 2.5-3 cm, almost glabrous.

Inflorescences are terminal, straight, 7-9 cm, bear 1 flower. Pedicels are naked.

The flowers are small.

Sepals and petals are pale green or reddish with brown stripes. The lip is golden yellow sometimes with brown marks. The elliptical or ovoid-elliptical sail , 1.5-2 × 0.7-0.9 cm, bare, sharp at the apex. Sinsepalum is similar to a sail, 1.4-1.8 × 0.7-0.9 cm, at the apex shallow 2-lobed.

Petals oblong-lanceolate, 1.5-1.8 × 0.5-0.6 cm, bare, sharp at the apex, often enveloping the lip. The lip is marsupial, slightly compressed, 1.2-1.5 cm, tuberous on the front surface. Staminodynia is widely elliptical, oblong, about 6 × 4 mm.

Flowering in June-July. Fruiting in August [4] .

Identification

The leaves of Cypripedium bardolphianum are smaller, sometimes burgundy at the edges and depart from the stem at a sharper angle than the leaves of Cypripedium forrestii . Cypripedium bardolphianum flowers tend to be slightly darker with reddish-brown hues, while Cypripedium forrestii has flowers that are more yellow in color. The staminode Cypripedium forrestii is usually brown with yellow spots, while the staminode Cypripedium bardolphianum is one-color, reddish-brown. The sepals of Cypripedium forrestii are longer and almost touch in front of the lip. The sepals of Cypripedium bardolphianum are painted in a dark brown tone without spots, and the sepals of Cypripedium forrestii are yellow, honey-colored with characteristic brown spots. A significant difference is the hair comb on the sepals of Cypripedium forrestii ; the sepals of Cypripedium bardolphianum do not have it [5] .

In Culture

Cyp. bardolphianum is present in some private collections. Information about agricultural technology is contradictory.

soil pH is 7.6 [7] . Recommended protection from winter rains, and abundant watering in spring and early summer [8] .

Zones of frost resistance : 4-6 [8] .
