Game career
Peter Aldrich played his first matches in professional tournaments in 1982 and 1983 as part of the Johannesburg Challenger . In 1986 , also in Johannesburg in the Open Championship of South Africa , for the first time in his career he entered the second round at the Grand Prix tournament, where he lost to the tenth racket of the world Andres Gomez . From mid- 1987, regular appearances in professional tournaments began, and already in July in Dublin, Aldrich won his first double in the doubles (with compatriot Warren Green ), and in December he achieved similar results in singles, winning first in East London (South Africa), and then in Cape Town. Over the year, he has made the way up almost 150 places in singles and 250 in doubles.
Since April 1988, Aldrich has been paired with senior compatriot Dani Visser , already an experienced player, a multiple finalist and winner of the Grand Prix tournaments. Together with Visser, he four times in 1988 reached the finals of the Grand Prix tournaments and one of them won, having won his first career title at this level. At the Wimbledon tournament, he and Visser reached the quarter-finals. During the season, they declared themselves as candidates for the highest places in the ranking, having twice beat the strongest pair of the world - Robert Seguso and Ken Flack . In singles Aldrich’s success was more modest - at the beginning of the season he won another Challenger, and in the summer he entered the third round of the US Open . Nevertheless, he was able to become one of the hundred best tennis players in the world in singles and rise in November to the 64th line in the ranking.
In 1989, Aldrich and Visser played six times in the finals of the Grand Prix tournaments, winning three of them in Indianapolis, San Francisco and Frankfurt. In nine tournaments, they reached the semi-finals, including the Masters tournament - the final tournament of the year with the participation of all the strongest players in the world, and at Wimbledon, as a year ago, to the quarter-finals. Aldrich finished the year in 12th place in the ranking, and in January 1990 he and Visser won the first Grand Slam tournament of his career - the Australian Open , which put Visser in first place in the rating and Pete in second. In July, they reached the final at Wimbledon, and then, having won the tournament in Stuttgart , they already topped the rating together. During the second half of the year, they lost the first position three more times and returned to it three times [1] - including after winning the US Open. As a result, they finished the season with the rank of the strongest couple in the world, sharing among themselves the first place in the individual ranking. Aldrich's biggest single-player success came the same year - right after Wimbledon he won the APR tournament in Newport , consecutively defeating five rivals in the ranking. Finally, in mixed pairs, Aldrich also showed the best career results: at first, together with Elna Reinah, he was seeded second in Wimbledon and reached the quarter-finals there [2] . At the US Open, they were sown only eighths, but advanced further, losing only to future champions Robin White and Shelby Kannon in the semifinals [3] .
In May 1991, Peter had to lie down for an operation to restore the ligaments of his right shoulder [4] . Until the end of the season, he did not return to the court. The following season, he resumed his doubles only and won with Visser the first Challenger in Indian Wells (California) , and then his ninth doubles title at the South African Open. Twice more - in San Francisco and Nice - they lost in the finals. In the future, however, the season was unsuccessful, and after May Aldrich was unable to win a single match, losing in the first round in seven tournaments in a row, the last of which he did not play with Visser. After 1992, Aldrich left the court, returning for only one match in 1996 to make a pair of Wisser, who completed his career. In total, during his short playing career he earned less than $ 800 thousand, but won ten singles and doubles tournaments, including two Grand Slam tournaments, and for 19 weeks he was the first racket of the world in doubles.
