Biography

Born in Lida in the family of Moshe-Zvi and Esther Gordon. Educated in the Talmud Tor and Yeshiva . In 1897 he arrived in Eretz Yisrael , settling in Jaffa , taught for three years at a Jewish men's school. In 1901 he returned to Warsaw , where he founded a school with Hebrew teaching, edited the magazines for children and youth “Olam Katan” (1901–1905), “Ha-Ne'urim” (1904–1905) and the teacher’s monthly “Ha-Pedagogue” "(1903-1904).

In 1924 he returned to Eretz Yisrael . Since 1907 he worked on extensive commentaries on the Bible , which are the main teaching tool for its study in secular schools in Israel . The author of the poetry book “Kinnor Yeshurun” (“Harp of Israel”, vols. 1-3, 1891-93) and the books “Torat ha-sifrut” (“Theory of Literature”, vols. 1-2, 1900). Gordon was a prolific translator; he translated the works of many famous writers into Hebrew, such as W. Shakespeare , I. Zangville , P. Heise , Lafontaine , G. Heine , T. Mora , Jehoash , S. Fruga .

Gordon was married to Malka Blumgarten, Jehovah's sister.

Streets in Petah Tikva , Tel Aviv , Haifa are named after him.
