Hannigan, Lisa

Lisa Margaret Hannigan (born February 12, 1981 , Kilklon , Ireland ) is an Irish singer, composer and musician. She began her musical career as a member of the band Damien Rice . Since the beginning of her solo career in 2007 she has released the albums Sea Sew (2008), Passenger (2011), At Swim (2016). Hannigan's music has received awards and nominations in both Ireland and the United States .

Early life and education

Lisa Hannigan was born on February 12, 1981 in Dublin , but grew up in Kilklon ( County Meath , Ireland ). She attended Scoil Oilibhéir Naofa Elementary School in Kilklon and The King's Hospital High School in Palmerstown . After graduation, she entered Trinity College Dublin to study Art History.

Career

In 2001, while still a student, Hannigan met with Damien Rice at a concert in Dublin [1] . Rice invited her to take part in the recording of his album O (2002), as well as the later "9". For some time, Hannigan toured with Rice as part of his group as a vocalist, as well as a guitarist, bass player and drummer [1] . In 2007, Lisa returned to Dublin and began a solo career. Some of the concert recordings of Lisa Hannigan can be heard on the air. Such as Willy by Joni Mitchell, Be My Husband by Nina Simon, Mercedes Benz Janice Joplin, and Roy Orbison's Love Hurts. Hannigan also performed live with her own group, called the Daisy Ockell Quartet, and was a guest vocalist on the recordings of Mick Christopher, The Frames and Herbie Hancock.

Sea Sew

Sea Sew 's debut album Lisa Hannigan rehearsed with her band in a garage in Thomastown. It was recorded in Dublin and was released in Ireland in September 2008. The single "Lille" was available for free download via the Internet. Also on the page on Myspace, Lisa posted the fruits of her needlework, which was later used for decoration in her videos. Some critics have called Sea Sew the best Irish album of the year. The album received favorable reviews in the Los Angeles Times and New York Times . The single "Lille" was released in August 2008 on Irish and American radio stations. In the same year, Hannigan acted as the opening act for singer and songwriter Jason Mraz on his tour of the United States.

Then Lisa appeared on the charity project Even Better Than the Disco Thing and performed a duet with Mick Flannery with his new song, Christmas Past. In December 2008, she made her solo debut in the UK at St John's Church ( London ). A little later, Hannigan signed a contract with the American ATO Records, which released her album in February 2009. Sea Sew was nominated for the Choice Music Award for Best Irish Album at the Meteor Music Awards in January 2009. In the same year, Hannigan appears on the American television show Jay Leno , The Colbert Report. He also performs at the BBC Later ... with Jools Holland with his song “I Don't Know”. After that, “Sea Sew” rises to the first place in the British chat. Then Hannigan performs at the Glastonbury '09 festival and goes on tour. Later, in 2009, she toured the United States with David Gray and performed solo shows in New York, Los Angeles and London. And then before the end of the year he gives tours to Ireland. The song "Ocean and Rock" was used in 2009 by Irish television in support of same-sex marriage entitled "Sinéad's Hand."

Passenger

Hannigan recorded her next album, Passenger , at Bryn Derwen Studios in North Wales with producer Joe Henry and engineer Ryan Freeland. In the USA and Canada, the album was released on September 20, 2011, and on October 7 of the same year - in Ireland and the United Kingdom. In 2012, Hannigan performed at the Eurosonic Festival.

Recognition

The music of Lisa Hannigan has received wide acclaim among both mass listeners and critics of Ireland and the United States. In 2008, her debut album Sea Sew was nominated for the Choice Music Prize.

In his recordings, Hannigan uses old broken, raucous instruments. About her vocals, Herbie Hancock said: "There is jazz in her notes and phrases ... I mean, some things sound like Miles would have done ..."
