Jwaneng diamond mine is the richest diamond mining quarry in the world.
Jwaneng Quarry is located in southern Botswana, approximately 120 km west of the country's capital, Gaborone . On the territory of the quarry there are three kimberlite pipes , the development of which is carried out in an open way . About 2100 people work in the quarry, living in the " closed city " of Jwaneng located here.
The career is managed by Debswana , a joint venture between De Beers Corporation and the Government of Botswana. The company began working with this quarry in 1982, and annually produces 9.3 million tons of ore and 37 million tons of gangue here; 14.3 million carats of diamonds were extracted from ore in 2003. According to 2005 estimates, there are enough reserves to maintain this level of production for another 27 years.
