Biography
Clelia Farnese was born around 1556, probably in Paris. She was the illegitimate daughter of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese and Claude de Beaune, maid of honor of Queen Catherine de Medici . [1] In the same year, returning from France, Alessandro Farnese entrusted her daughter to the care of her sister, Victoria Farnese , Duchess of Urbine . Clelia was raised with her cousin Lavinia della Rovere. According to Girolamo Gigli, Cardinal Alessandro Farnese admitted that he did three great things in his life: the Palazzo Farnese , the church Il Gesu and the daughter Clelia, who, in 1570, brought her father to Rome was considered the most beautiful Roman aristocracy. [2] Torkvato Tasso dedicated to her sonnet “The Frost Sacred”, [3] Cristoforo Castelletti dedicated to her “Grievances of Love,” [4] Michel de Montaigne called her the most beautiful woman in Rome. [5] .
In 1570, Clelia Farnese married Gandgiorgio Cesarini, Marquis of Civittanova ( Italian: Giovan Giorgio Cesarini ), the standard bearer of the Roman people. At that time, Cesarini’s family experienced financial difficulties, which were successfully resolved with the help of a bride’s dowry. In this marriage, one child was born, Marquis Giuliano II Cesarini ( Italian: Giuliano II Cesarini ).
After the death of her first husband in 1585, the head of the Farnese family, Alessandro Farnese , forced the young widow to marry Marco Pio of Savoy ( Italian: Marco III Pio di Savoia ), Signor Sassuolo , because of which she had to leave Rome. Marriage was not happy. The second husband was a cruel man and allowed domestic violence. [6] After his death on November 27, 1599, she immediately returned to Rome.
Clelia Farnese died on September 11, 1613 in Rome.
