The genus comes from Scotland and dates back to the XVIII century. The offspring of the court banker Richard Sutherland (1739–1791), by the Imperial Supreme Decree of July 7, 1788, elevated, with descending descendants, to the baronial dignity of the Russian Empire.
The ancestor was the eldest son of a Scottish shipbuilder Alexander Sutherland ( Alexander Sutherland ; c. 1700-1760), adopted by the Russian service in 1736 [1] . Richard Sutherland, known in Russia as Sutherland, was married to Sarah (d. 1787) and had a daughter of the same name (b. 1766) and son Richard (b. 1772, d. Not earlier than 1790).

Emblem Description
The shield is crossed. At the top of the scarlet field is the golden Imperial crown. Below in the azure field there is a silver anchor, a silver dolphin with a scarlet mouth wrapped around it.
Above the shield is a golden baron's crown with three ostrich feathers.
Curious Facts
In his “Notes on Staying in Russia during the Czarina II Reign” [2] Count Segur gives a historical joke about the order of Catherine II to St. Petersburg police chief Ryleev “to make a scarecrow out of Suderland” (it was about the empress’s dead dog). This case became the plot basis of the story of S. S. Narovchatov “Absolute” [3] .
