Story
The film tells about the family of Valastro, hereditary fishermen living in the small Sicilian town of Achi Trezza. They work hard, but their catch is barely enough to make ends meet, while fish purchasers make good money from someone else's work. Once, Antonio Valastro, a young man who managed to see the world while serving in the Navy, announces that from now on his family will have no business with buyers and will start his own business. On the security of the house, they buy salt and preserve all the caught fish, so that later they can sell it. However, other fishermen did not follow the example of the Valastro family, and cope with the routine alone is not at all simple ...
Making a movie
In 1947, Visconti, along with his young assistants Francesco Rosi and Franco Zeffirelli, arrived in Sicily, in the small fishing town of Achi Trezza, to watch the changes in the life of the common people and at the same time make an adaptation of the novel by Verga, about which he had long dreamed. The director stayed here for seven months, the result was an epic story about the life of Sicilian fishermen, filmed in the spirit of Italian neorealism . It was planned that this would be the first part of the trilogy about the life of the working people: the next two were supposed to talk about the struggle of Sicilian miners and peasants. However, in the end, there was only enough money for an “episode by the sea”. All the actors employed in the tape were found here, on the scene - these are fishermen and their families, speaking in their local dialect, which is not understood in mainland Italy. To clarify the events and partly to translate the dialogue of the characters into Italian, an announcer's text was recorded. [one]
