Biography

Wilhelmina Maria of Denmark is the daughter of King Frederick VI of Denmark and Maria Sofia of Hesse-Kassel . Her father did not have male heirs, so the next king of Denmark was to be the husband of Wilhelmina Maria.

On November 1, 1828, Wilhelmina married Prince Frederick of Denmark , the future King Frederick VII, in Copenhagen . Their engagement was officially announced back in 1826. Prince Frederick on the male side was a direct descendant of King Frederick V of Denmark from his second wife Juliana Maria Braunschweig-Wolfenbuttelsky .

The marriage of the prince and the princess united the two lines of the ruling house, the relationship between which remained tense since 1814. Their union was welcomed by Danish society. However, the marriage was unhappy. The reason for this was the licentious lifestyle of Prince Frederick of Denmark, his betrayal and drunkenness. Possessing a soft and kind-hearted character, Maria Wilhelmina was not able to influence her husband. The unfortunate personal life of her daughter caused concern for her parents. In 1834, the couple began to live separately, and in 1837 they finally divorced.

In the Amalienborg Palace on May 19, 1838, Wilhelmina Maria married for the second time to the Duke of Karl Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg , the elder brother of the future King Christian IX of Denmark , and moved to her new spouse in Kiel. Her second marriage was very happy. Both marriages of Wilhelmina Mary were childless. Perhaps she was barren, as there is no evidence that she was ever pregnant.

During the First Schleswig War (1848-1851), Wilhelmina Maria sided with her husband, who opposed Denmark. This position led to a breakdown in relations between her and the Danish royal family. At that time she lived in Dresden . In 1852, after reconciliation, she returned with her husband to their homeland, where they settled in the Lausenlund castle. The love of compatriots for her parents contributed to the restoration of the former popularity of the princess among the Danish people.

In 1870, Wilhelmina Maria settled in the castle of Glucksburg, in which she lived until the end of her days. Karl Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg died in 1878. In old age, the duchess, having lost her hearing, led a secluded lifestyle and spent a lot of time and money on charity, for which she was especially respected by the inhabitants of Glucksburg. In 1864, the Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg lost its sovereign status. The Dowager Duchess welcomed the new royal dynasty in Denmark.

Wilhelmina Maria of Denmark died on May 30, 1891 in Glucksburg, at that time already being a part of Prussia .
