Biography

The Great Seal of Umber II

Umbert II ascended the throne after the death of his older brother Gig VIII , who died during the siege of the Savoy fortress of Perrier. He was the last Dauphin before this title passed to the heirs of the French king.

In 1345-1347, Umbert participated in the crusade against Smyrna, which became tragic for him: his wife, accompanying him, died. In addition, the entire count treasury went to equip the troops and the dauphin was completely ruined.

The only son of Umberto II died at the age of two, so he did not have an heir, and since 1338 he had hatched a plan to sell his possessions to Pope Benedict XII . This venture was unsuccessful. But there was another buyer - the king of France Philip VI . The deal took place in 1349. The king paid Umbert II 400 thousand ecu and pledged to pay an annual pension. One of the terms of the agreement was the preservation of the autonomy of the county and the preservation of the title of the Dauphin for its rulers, as well as the exemption of residents of Dauphin from certain taxes.

After the sale of his lands, Umbert joined the Dominican Order and intended to become the Archbishop of Paris and later - the Pope. He accepted the titles of Prince Briancon, Duke de Chamsore and Marquis de Cézan.

In 1345–1348 he led the Second Crusade to Smyrna .

From 1351 - the titular patriarch of Alexandria , from 1352 - the archbishop of Reims .

Umber II died in 1355. His wife was Maria de Beau , daughter of Bertrand III de Beau , Count of Andria.
