Etymology
The name of the city is associated with the name of Sir Frederick Richards , by order of which in 1879 a temporary harbor was arranged.
History
Richards Bay was founded in 1954 . The status of the city received in 1969 . In 1976, the harbor was rebuilt into a deep-sea port, connected to Johannesburg via the railway, as well as oil and gas pipelines .
Geographical location and climate
The city is located in the eastern part of the province, on the coast of the Indian Ocean , at a distance of approximately 165 kilometers northeast of the administrative center of the province of Pietermaritzburg . The absolute height is 0 meters above sea level [3] .
The climate is subtropical , characterized by warm, humid summers and mild frost-free winters. The average annual temperature is 21.5 ° C. The average annual rainfall is 1228 mm.
Population
According to the 2001 official census , the population was 44 852 people, of which men accounted for 50.3%, women - 49.7%, respectively. Whites made up 41.5% of the city’s population; blacks - 35.1%; Asians - 19.6%; color - 3.8%. Economics and Transport
The city has one of the world's largest coal terminals . Also in the city are two aluminum plants and a fertilizer plant. Urban export products include: coal , aluminum , titanium , ferrochrome , cellulose , etc.
Ridards Bay connects with other cities through rail and road transport . Also in the vicinity of the city is the airport of the same name ( ICAO : FARB, IATA : RCB) [3] .
