Biography
He was born on January 28, 1922 in the village of Grigoryevka of the Turkestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (now Kyrgyzstan ).
In 1942 he graduated from the Moscow Polytechnic Institute named after N. K. Krupskaya . Professor of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov ( 1956 ). He taught at other universities. Doctor of Philology ( 1958 ). He worked at IMLI , head of the sector of the Complete Works of M. Gorky (1965-1988).
In 1964, he was awarded the V. G. Belinsky Prize for the book “Publicism of M. Gorky” [1] .
He ran twice as a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR , but both times failed. In 1966, before the vote, a letter was read out by the IMLI staff (signed, among others, by L. I. Timofeev , O. A. Derzhavina , V. D. Kuzmina , A. A. Elistratova , S. V. Turaev and others), in which stated: “We know A. I. Ovcharenko from working together at IMLI and we believe that he does not deserve this high rank. His scientific achievements are very modest. " [2] [3]

A. I. Ovcharenko died on July 20, 1988 , drowning while bathing while relaxing in Nida (Lithuania) [4] [5] . He was buried at Kuntsevsky cemetery [6] .
Daughter Olga (born 1954) is a Spanish literary critic.
