“Handsome Serge” ( French: Le Beau Serge ) is Claude Chabrol's debut feature film, released in 1958 . The tape received the prize for best directing at the Locarno Film Festival and the Jean Vigo Prize for the best film. Content
Story
Francois ( Jean-Claude Brialy ), a tuberculosis patient, returns from Switzerland to his native French village after ten years of absence. He meets old acquaintances, including his longtime friend Serge (Gerard Blen), who had previously married Yvonne. After the death of his child, born with Down Syndrome , Serge changed a lot, became gloomy and refusing to face reality, drowns his grief in guilt. Francois realizes his responsibility for what is happening and he has a desire to help Serge.

The film was shot from December 4, 1957 to February 4, 1958 in the French village of Sardan , in the Creuse department, where Claude Chabrol spent his childhood during the war [4] . The premiere took place on June 6, 1958.
