Andrushev Astronomical Observatory “July Morning”

Wikipedia was first discovered on September 8, 1997 at the CERGA Observatory as part of the OCA-DLR project [5] . Upon registration, the property was designated 1997 RO 4 . But the data obtained was not enough to calculate the orbit.

In March - April 2007, the asteroid was registered by Mount Lemmon and the Spacewatch project [5] . However, he received the designation 2007 FK 34 .

Finally, on August 25, 2008, the asteroid was discovered at the Andrushev Astronomical Observatory [5] . When registering the discovery, the object was assigned the designation 2008 QH 24 [6] .

On April 18, 2011, the object was included in the catalog of minor planets under number 274301 [7] .

The proposal to name one of the Wikipedia asteroids discovered in Zhytomyr came from Wikipedia and member of the board of the public association Wikimedia Ukraine Andrei Makuhi [8] . With the initiative to name the celestial body in honor of the free encyclopedia , the founder of the Andrushev Observatory Yuri Ivaschenko addressed the Committee on the Nomenclature of Minor Planets . The proposal was approved by all members of the committee, and on January 27, 2013 the asteroid officially received a new name [1] [3] .

The note added to the Circular of Small Planets [2] No. 82403 reads [9] :

Wikipedia is a free, copyleft, collaboratively edited online encyclopedia launched in 2001. In 11 years of its compilation it became one of the largest reference works and one of the most visited web-sites on the Internet. It is developed in more than 270 languages by enthusiasts from all over the world.

According to several media reports, such a decision, dedicated to the “birthday” of Ukrainian Wikipedia [10] , makes the asteroid “the first monument to Wikipedia and Wikipedia around the world” [1] [4] .

Orbital characteristics

Wikipedia circulates in the middle of the Main Asteroid Belt at an average distance of 2.382 a. e. (356.3 million km) from the Sun. Its orbit has a small eccentricity of 0.1455 and an inclination of 6.732 °. Thus, the maximum distance from Wikipedia to the Sun is 2.728 a. e. (408.2 million km), the minimum - 2.035 a. e. (304.5 million km).

The Wikipedia period of revolution around the Sun is 3.68 years (1343 days).

The absolute magnitude of Wikipedia is 16.9 m . Its visible luster during the synodic period varies between 18.8-22.5 m [11] .

Physical Characteristics

The size of Wikipedia has not been established, but, based on its brightness, it can be, depending on the albedo , from 1 to 2 km [12] .

Presumably composed of stone and metal [1] [2] . Outwardly, it is practically indistinguishable from similar celestial bodies from the main asteroid belt [1] [4] .
