Biography

Born on July 14, 1876 in the village of Lopukhovka, Atkarsk district, Saratov province, in a peasant family. In 1899 he graduated from the Saratov Theological Seminary ; he married Olga Kuznetsova and was ordained a deacon , then a priest . In 1899-1910 he served in the Kraishevsky Tikhvin Nunnery [1] .

In 1910-1914 he studied at the Moscow Archaeological Institute .

Since 1910, he served in the house church in honor of the icon of “All Who Sorrowful Joy” under the Brotherhood in the name of the Queen of Heaven on Zubovsky Boulevard in Moscow , attributed to the Church of the Assumption in Cossacks on Polyanka )

After 1917, he spoke in his sermons denouncing the repressions of the new government. Before the prayer for the Decree on the separation of the Church from the state, he said:

Listen, you, the inhabitants of Smolny . We will not obey you, we will never obey you for anything ... We will perform all the sacraments of our Church and all public services. You will take away our temples by force, we will rule the service of the Lord God in houses and even dungeons. You arbitrarily capture our antimins . Without them, with the blessing of our bishops , we will perform the liturgy . You will take our holy vessels with violence. In domestic vessels, then we will make a terrible sacrifice of the Body and Blood of the Lord. Without it we cannot live, it is our life, without it we will die. The Holy Eucharist gives us joy, unearthly enthusiasm and the power to live, fight, and the strength to courageously, fearlessly endure suffering. We are not afraid of persecution and torment from you. We want them, we long for their bloody beauty. We do not tremble with your revolutionary tribunals (there are no courts, after all). Disfigured by your mob, our bodies will pierce, like needles, your conscience, they will pave the way for the victory of light over hopeless darkness, Christianity over new paganism , and the victory will undoubtedly be ours ... [2]

From October 15, 1918 to December 1924, he was rector of the St. Nicholas Church in Plotniki on the Arbat . He began to serve in this temple after the death of Archpriest Joseph Fudel [1] [3] . He was a famous preacher , confessor and friend of a number of scientists, philosophers, and cultural figures. He was close to Metropolitan Peter (Polyansky) [4] .

He especially honored the miraculous image of the icon of the Mother of God, the Sovereign, and often went to Kolomenskoye to serve an akathist in front of her [1] [5] .

By the definition of the Holy Synod from December 12, 1923 he was appointed a member of the Moscow Diocesan Council under the Patriarch Tikhon .

He was arrested on December 10, 1924 on charges of "systematically conducting anti-Soviet agitation among the believing masses, spreading false rumors about persecution of the church and ministers of worship by the power and foreign intervention in the defense of the church." Placed in Butyrka prison . According to the decision of the OGPU judicial board of March 14, 1925, he was released on bail on the day of the icon of the Mother of God “Sovereign” . The investigation was continued in connection with a group case known as “the case of Archbishop Peter (Rudnev) ”; On May 16, 1925, the case was dismissed, "since the investigation of the above crime was not confirmed."

From 1925 to November 1930 he again served in the St. Nicholas Church in Plotniki on the Arbat; was dean of the Dorogomilovsky district.

The altarpiece in the church under Archpriest Vladimir was a specialist in theoretical mechanics Nikolai Buchholz , later the head of the departments of theoretical mechanics at MPEI and Moscow State University . The scientist Vladimir Shchelkachev , a former parishioner of this temple, recalled:

The Gospel says that the Lord the Holy Spirit gives gifts: love, peace, joy ... And so, Father Vladimir possessed all these gifts ... <...> He had an artist Nesterov with his whole family, a famous pianist, professor of the Moscow Conservatory Igumnov and others like that well-known and ordinary people. Father Vladimir always delivered sermons not only after the liturgy, but also after each all-night service, distinguished not only by depth, but also by intelligibility for everyone [6] .

In 1927, he was awarded the Miter [1] [4] by the Deputy Patriarchal Locum Tenens Archbishop Seraphim (Samoilovich) .

In the spring of 1928, together with Archbishop Juvenal (Maslovsky), he was sent to Yaroslavl to hold talks with Metropolitan Agafangel (Preobrazhensky) . After talking with them, the seriously ill Metropolitan Agafangel reconciled with the Deputy Patriarchal Locum Tenens Metropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky) [4] .

He was arrested for the second time on November 4, 1930 in Moscow. He was kept in the Lubyanka prison , then in the Butyrka prison ; On September 3, 1931, he was convicted by the Collegium of the OGPU of the USSR on charges of participation in the "All-Union Organization of the True Orthodox Church" (Articles 58-3, 58-11 of the RSFSR Criminal Code) and sentenced to ten years concentration camps, counting the period from November 4, 1930 [7] .

Since 1931 he was in Svirlag in the city of Lodeynoye Pole, Leningrad Region [1] ; On October 21, 1932, he was commissioned for heart disease and sent to Kazan , settled in the city of Spassk-Tatarsky, in 1935 renamed Kuybyshev (now Bolgar ).

On August 24, 1938 he was arrested for the third time through slanderous denunciation. He was accused of being a member and one of the leaders of the “priestly-monarchist organization” in Moscow, was a member of the “party of imyaslavtsev ”, organized another party, prepared terrorist groups, collaborated with the Socialist Revolutionaries , sympathized with Trotsky and Bukharin . Imprisoned in Spassky Prison [8] . The released cellmate of Vladimir’s father said that he was very kind, sympathized with everyone, encouraged, and shared a common love. One Tartar, who did not get a place in a crowded cell, let go of his bunk, next to him [8] [9] .

Another case of “anti-Soviet agitation” inside the prison was fabricated in the prison and referred to the “ special meeting ”. Most likely he was threatened with execution, but an excessive form of imprisonment and an already young age undermined his health, and on February 16, 1940 he died “of heart failure” in prison No. 7 in the place of Tatarstan, the city of Kuybyshev (previously Spassk-Tatar, now Bulgar ) ". He was buried in the avenue closest to the prison [8] . According to his grandson, Archpriest Vladimir Vorobyov , “it was clear that the death sentence was a foregone conclusion. If he had not died in prison, he would probably have been shot ” [10] .
