Anthony Oleschinsky ( Polish: Antoni Oleszczyński ; January 16, 1794 , Krasnistav - February 28, 1879 , Paris ) is a Polish graphic artist, a well-known master of Polish nineteenth-century portrait carving engraving.

Biography

Born in the family of a justice of the peace in Krasnostava. Famous artists were his two younger brothers - the lithographer and illustrator Severin (1801–1876) and the sculptor and graphic artist Vladislav (1807–1866) Oleshchinsky.

Serving in Warsaw, in the Chancellery of the State Council of the Kingdom of Poland , in 1816 he presented to Emperor Alexander I samples of his calligraphic art, as a result of which, by the Highest Command, he was determined at the official expense to the pupils of the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts .

In 1817-1824 he studied the art of engraving. A talented student of the largest Russian engraver, Professor N. I. Utkin .

In 1819 and 1820 received small and large silver medals, in 1824, at the end of the academic course, he was awarded a small gold medal for the portrait of A. Kokorinov , engraved from the original by D. Levitsky .

After being subsequently sent for his improvement abroad, as a pensioner of the Kingdom of Poland, from 1825 he worked in Paris under the leadership of J. T. Rischom and J. B. Reno. After four years spent in France, he moved to Florence . In 1832, the order of Emperor Nicholas I was followed to appoint him to serve in the Imperial Academy of Arts, but A. Oleshchinsky chose to stay in Paris, where he lived until the end of his days, without ceasing to work hard with a chisel and needle, and in the last years of his life he was also engaged in ceramic painting.

Creativity

The author of a large number of mederites and engravings on metal , graphic works. He engraved portraits, landscapes, historical and everyday, almost exclusively, Polish subjects.

In Paris, he engraved a lot for the publication of L. Khodzko and Grabovsky - “Pologne illustrée”.

First, he published his works in separate sheets, and then prepared and published 2 collection albums of his graphics - “Polish Diversity” (Paris, 1832–1833) and “Memoirs of Poles who became famous in foreign and distant lands” (Paris, 1843) . He participated in the illustration and publication of the book "Dzieje narodu polskiego" .

As stated in the "Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary", regarding the fertility, originality, brilliance and grace of the cutter, he not only did not yield to his teacher, N. Utkin, but sometimes surpassed him.

Vignettes and small pictures with screensavers from Polish manuscripts, with castles of various styles and with fantastic backgrounds are especially successful. The list of his works is placed in the work of D. A. Rovinsky : "A detailed dictionary of Russian engravers" ( St. Petersburg ., 1895).
