Geography
Grayling is located in the western part of the state on the banks of the Yukon River . The area of the city is 28.3 km², of which 0.2 km² (approx. 0.7%) is open water. The city serves the airport of the same name .
History
In 1900, it became known about the existence of the Grayling settlement with a population of 75 people, a store and a large sawn timber warehouse. In 1962-1966, in connection with the regular flooding of the native settlement, almost all residents, 25 families of the neighboring village of Holikachuk, moved to Grayling, carriers of the disappearing eponymous language . In 1969, the city government was formed. Since 1977, for odd years, the city has been a point on the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race sled dog race.
