History
In 1898, Gibbon Fort was built on the site of the future city, which is necessary for servicing the telegraph line between Fairbanks and Nome , while the first post office was opened. In 1906, gold prospectors began to leave the banks of the Yukon , so by 1923 the fort was completely abandoned. During World War II , an airfield was built near Tanana, which served as an important refueling base. In 1949, a hospital was built, which in the 1960-1970s played an important economic role for the city, providing jobs for 54 people, but in 1982 it was closed: as of 2010, its buildings are used as a health clinic, a counseling center , the office of the local tribe and the residence of the elders. In 1961, Tanana received the status of a city, in 1982 - the city of the first class ( 1st Class City ).
In 2012, the life of the city and its inhabitants was shown in the 9-series documentary series Yukon Men [3] .
