Royal Mail badge with RMS Laconia liner
RMS ( Royal Mail Ship - Royal Mail Ship ) - a prefix adopted in the UK in 1840 [1] to designate ships that entered into an agreement with British Royal Mail. The vessel had the right to use the logo with the image of the Royal Mail crown [2] [3] [4] in the voyage. Since 1850, contracts began to be concluded with private companies. If the agreement was terminated, then the standard designation SS ( Steamship ) was returned to the ships [5] .
The most famous shipping companies whose ships had the RMS prefix were White Star Line and Kunard Line [2] [6] . In 2004, he was assigned Queen Mary 2 . In recent years, air transport has been used to transport mail.
