Miguel Angel Garcia ( Miguel Angel Garcia , better known as: Mikey Garcia ); born December 15, 1987 , Ventura , California , USA ) is an American professional boxer who performs in five: ranging from lightweight (to 57.15 kg), lightweight (up to 61.235 kg) and welterweight (up to 66.68 kg) weight categories . IBF World Champion (2018) and WBC Diamond Champion (2017–2018) 1st Welterweight. World champion in WBC (2017–2019) and IBF (2018) lightweight versions. WBO World Champion (2013–2014) in the 2nd featherweight. World champion in WBO and The Ring (2013) featherweight versions.

Biography

The Garcia family come from Paninducaero, ( Michoacan , Mexico ). His father Eduardo Garcia was an amateur boxer and coach of world champion boxer Fernando Vargas . His older brother Roberto Garcia was a professional boxer and former IBF world champion in the first lightweight who lost his belt in a fight with Diego Corrales . His older brother Daniel, also a former boxer and former boxer coach of Victor Ortiz . Miguel Angel is a graduate of the Ventura County Police Academy.

Miguel began his amateur career at the age of fourteen and defeated current champion Ring , WBC and WBA (Super) welterweight, Danny Garcia .

In 2004, he won the Golden Gloves national junior tournament. In 2005, he won the championship of the sports league.

Professional career

Featherweight

Garcia made his debut in the professional ring in July 2006

In October 2008, he won on points the first serious rival, Colombian Walter Estrada (34-6).

On April 3, 2010 , Mikey Garcia knocked out Mexican Thomas Willie in the first round and won the USBA title. On August 14, 2010, Garcia knocked out American Cornelius Luke in the IBF eliminator.

On March 26, 2011, Miguel Angel, in a fight for the NABF and WBO NABO titles, knocked out the undefeated American Matt Remiland (23-0). In June, Garcia defended his titles by knockout in a fight with Mexican Rafael Guzman (28-2).

In September 2012 , Garcia knocked out in the second round of the former world champion, Colombian Mauricio Pastrana [2] .

On November 10, 2012, Mikey knocked out Argentinean Jonathan Victor Barros (34-3-1) [3] .

On January 19, 2013 , Mikey Garcia entered the ring with WBO World Champion Orlando Salido . Salido and Garcia were at the top of the Ring magazine ranking, and in the first two games since 2004, the vacant The Ring featherweight title was played.

Garcia acted in a duel very experienced and four times sent Salido to canvas. By the end of the fifth round, Orlando had a strong edema over his right eye. In the eighth round, after an accidental head-on collision, Salido broke Garcia’s nose and the fight was stopped on the recommendation of a doctor. Mikey Garcia won the technical decision of the judges, and became the new world champion in versions of WBO and The Ring featherweight [4] .

On June 15, 2013, Mike Garcia fought against Puerto Rican Juan Manuel Lopez . Garcia won the match by TKO in round 4.

Second featherweight

After this fight, Garcia climbed a category higher, and on November 9, 2013, he had a fight against the WBO champion in this weight category of Puerto Rican Roman Martinez . Garcia was knocked down in the 2nd round but controlled the fight and in the 8th round Martinez got into the liver sending him a heavy knockout. Garcia became the new WBO champion in this weight category.

On January 25, 2014, Garcia met with Mexican Juan Carlos Burgos . The fight took place with the advantage of Garcia, to which Burgos only answered with jabs, except that the Mexican was able to shake Garcia with his left hook in the second round. At the end of the battle, all 3 judges gave the victory to the champion 119: 109 and 118: 110 twice, to which the hall answered with a whistle. Garcia unconvincingly defended his title.

Lightweight

On January 28, 2017, he met with the world champion of Montenegrin, Dean Zlatichanin, who did not have defeats. In the 3rd round, Garcia sent Zlatichanin a heavy knockout with a shot to the right and won the WBC lightweight world champion title [5] . In April 2019, he decided not to return to lightweight and was stripped of the WBC title (the title became vacant) and declared "champion on vacation" [6] .

Welterweight

March 16, 2019 held a welterweight bout with American Errol Spence and lost by unanimous decision [7] .
