Biography
In 1895 he received a patent and began to release special cans , the tightness of the contents of which was achieved using a rubber gasket and a metal lock.
In later versions of the cans, the rubber gasket partially replaced the cellophane (in particular, for the preservation of jams), a threaded cap appeared. The device became so widespread in Germany and other countries that as a term meaning canning in German, already in 1907, the Duden dictionary indicated not only the usual Einkochen , but also Einwecken .
Initially, trade at Vecca itself was unsuccessful, even his representative in Emmerich-on-Rhine , Georg van Eyck , managed to make more than half of the total sales. Vecc persuaded Van Eyck to move to Eflingen (in southern Baden) and January 1, 1900 [1] to jointly establish the company "J. Weck & Co.". Thus, the surname of I. Vekka was registered as a trademark. [2]
Contrary to popular belief, Weck was not the inventor of canning jars bearing his name. A patent for a method of preserving food by heating was bought by him in 1895 [3] from chemist Dr. Rudolf Rempel (1859-1893), who received it approximately on April 24, 1892. This patent, which allows to preserve fruits without using alcohol, interested including, and because he was a vegetarian and a sober.
Thanks to the successful advertising of van Eyck, the method of preservation - and with it the dishes of Vecca were quickly spread. By 1901, Vecca left the company and settled in Alsace, where he died in 1914.
In the Soviet Union
Glassware of a similar sample with different types of caps (including the drag plate ) was widely used for conservation in the USSR, where it is referred to in the literature as “Vekka” type banks . Similar banks with a capacity from 0.5 to 3 liters are produced to this day.
