List of George Gershwin

George Gershwin

The list of works by the American composer George Gershwin includes 15 classical compositions, 22 piano pieces and preludes, music for various films, theatrical productions and shows, as well as numerous pop songs.

George Gershwin began composing at an early age. From the age of 16 he worked part-time as a pianist-seller in Broadway music salons and at the same time composed his first pop songs. With his elder brother Ira Gershwin, he wrote a total of about 300 songs, including hits such as “ Fascinating Rhythm ”, “ Swanee ”, “ I caught the rhythm ” . I Got Rhythm ) and many others [1] . Since the 1920s, Gershwin has been closely involved in writing music for theatrical productions and musicals, of which are widely known, for example, “ Ladies, please! "( Eng. Lady, Be Good! )," Rosalie "( Eng. Rosalie )," About You Sing "( Eng. Of Thee I Sing ) and others.

In addition to popular music, Gershwin was fond of classical works. His first one-act opera Blue Monday was written in 1922. It was followed by such major orchestral works as The Rhapsody in the Blues Style (1924), Piano Concerto in F Major (1925), the symphonic poem American in Paris (1928) and others. The last and one of the most famous works of Gershwin was the opera Porgy and Bess (1937). As a talented pianist, Gershwin also wrote piano music. Especially popular was his cycle of preludes for piano ( Eng. Three Preludes ) [2] .

According to critics, the work of Gershwin combined the traditions of European classical music and African American folklore. The composer had a high performing culture, as well as the ability to diversify music with complex and interesting improvisations [1] .
