Club career

McBride was born June 10, 1938 in Govan , an area of the largest city in Scotland - Glasgow [8] . This area is also known for the fact that Ibroks Stadium is located on its territory - the arena of the Rangers club, one of the grandees of highland football [8] . Educated at the school of St. Gerard ( Eng. St Gerard's Secondary School ) [9] .

At the age of 15, Joe began playing for the youth team of the Kilmarnock team [8] . For four years spent as part of the young “killies”, McBride managed to play for a short time at the Kirkintilloch Rob Roy club, where he was sent by the leadership of the East Ershire team under a lease agreement [8] . In 1957, Joe was recruited for his first Kilmarnock roster [1] . Two years later, the young talent attracted the English Wolverhampton Wanderers , who bought the player’s transfer for £ 12.5 thousand [8] . But McBride’s career in the camp of the “wolves” did not work out, and, having not played a single game for the club, he was sold to Luton Town that same year [1] . This transition also did not bring success to Joe - in 1960 he returned to Scotland, signing a contract with Partis Tisl [1] . For the "thistle" revealed McBride's talent as a scorer, and soon the big teams of the "mountain" country began to show interest in him.

In 1962, Joe replenished the composition of Motherwell [8] . The next three football years, McBride invariably became the top scorer of the "steelworkers" [8] , and in 1965 he was signed for 22 thousand pounds by Glasgow's Celtic [8] [10] . According to the results of his first season in the ranks of the “Celts”, the forward became the best sniper of the national championship with 31 goals, sharing this honorary title with striker “ Dunfermline Athletic ” Alex Ferguson [11] . The next football year, McBride began also super productively [12] . However, in December 1966 he received a severe injury to his left knee [9] in a match with Aberdeen [10] and dropped out before the winter of next year [8] [10] . Damage deprived Joe of the opportunity to fully participate in the most successful season in the history of Celtic - the Celts became the champions of Scotland [13] , won both the Cup of the country [14] [15] and the European Cup [3] [8] [16] .

After the injury, McBride was never able to regain his place in the main team of the “white-green” [10] and in 1968 he moved to the capital's “ Hibernian ” [8] . With the Hibs, Joe quickly proved that he had not lost his striking conditions: in the first three matches for Edinburgh, the striker scored eight goals. First, in his debut game for Hibernian, he hit the Rangers, four days later scored a hat-trick in the Fairs Cup match against Lokomotiv from Leipzig , three days later McBride scored four goals for Greenock Morton [ 8] [17] . Like the times at Motherwell, Joe consistently, in the 1968/69 and 1969/70 seasons, became the team's top scorer. [8] On September 16, 1970, McBride designed his second “European” hat-trick in his career, upsetting the Swedish Malmö three times in the Fairs Cup match [18] .

Joe left the Hibernian in 1971 [1] [8] . Before ending his career in 1972, McBride played for the Dunfermline Athletic and Clyde clubs [1] [9] .

Quotes

Jimmy McGrory , footballer and head coach of Celtic:

Once they asked me who I would call the best forward of the Celts, whose game I had a chance to witness firsthand. I replied that it was, without a doubt, Joe McBride ... He played amazingly with his head and he had enough for the goal even half the chance that ordinary attackers needed for this [10] .
