In 1960, the first volume of the novel "The Adventures of Werner Holt" was published, which reflected the author's personal impressions of 1944-1945. The writer managed to create a vital and attractive image of a German youth, brought up in the spirit of Nazi propaganda, but gradually freed from its influence under the influence of the harsh realities of the war.

The novel was a huge success both in the GDR and abroad: in a short time it was published with a total circulation of over two million copies and translated into fifteen languages [4] . In the GDR, he was included in the school curriculum in literature.
