Biography
Christian Molbek was born in Soryo , studied at the Soryo Academy, graduating in 1802, but did not receive a professional historical education. Since 1804, he worked at the Royal Library of Denmark.
In 1829 he became a professor of literature and art history at the University of Copenhagen, and in 1830-1842 he was also director of the Royal Danish Theater. In 1839 he participated in the creation of the Danish Historical Society, and was also one of the founders of the Historisk Tidsskrift , one of the oldest scientific periodicals on history that has survived to the present day.
In 1813 he published the history of the Dietmar Wars , in 1821 - the history of King Eric the Plow Penny , in 1837-1840 - stories on the medieval history of Denmark, in 1840-1841 - the experience of the philosophy of history. According to Danish literature, the works of Molbek about Elenschleger, Ewald and others are known, as well as his lecture on Danish poetry.
The most important are the philological studies of Molbek: his book on Danish dialects (1811), “Dictionary of Danish language” (1833), “Lexicon of Danish dialects” (1833-1841), “Danish glossary” (1853-1857), “Collection of sayings” (1850) and others. In 1853-1856, a collection of small articles and studies by Molbek was published. Adjacent to the conservative camp, Molbek argued with the liberal party and with supporters of the idea of the Scandinavian union, which did not prevent him from working on the cultural rapprochement of the three Scandinavian peoples. In this regard, his letters from Sweden (1812) and his studies in Swedish literature are very curious. In 1883, Molbek's correspondence with his contemporaries was published, representing a lot of curiosity to characterize his era. As a literary critic, he gained fame after his crushing reviews regarding the works of Hans Christian Andersen and Bernhard Severin Ingeman .
His son became a famous translator in Denmark. Christian Molbek was buried in a cemetery in his hometown of Soryo.
