Description

Describes the history of the Jewish people from the death of Moses to the death of Joshua (1272 B.C. - 1244 B.C.) .

According to Jewish tradition, the author of the book is Joshua himself (with the exception of the last lines telling about his death and the funeral, which were added by the prophet Samuel ). It is placed after the Pentateuch of Moses, is closely connected with it and constitutes its continuation, so that some scholarly critics (Dillman and others) directly attribute it to this group of biblical books, which they therefore call the “ ”.

The book tells about the Israeli invasion of Canaan under the leadership of Joshua (Joshua), the conquest of part of Canaan and its division between the tribes . It ends with a narrative of the last days and the death of the great leader. The entire book consists of twenty-four chapters and breaks up into two main parts and an appendix. The narrative includes: 1) the events that followed the death of Moses; invasion of the country and its subjugation; 2) division of the country; 3) the action of reubenites , etc .; two conversions of Joshua to the Israelites shortly before his death; brief explanations are added to this regarding the place of his burial and orders concerning the remains of Joseph [2] .

The book is a collection of reports from the battlefield, replete with stories that vividly characterize Jewish military law in antiquity. According to Brockhaus-Efron, criticism indicates some anachronisms in the book, but in general it “bears the stamp of modernity and historical truth” [2] . The most difficult is to compare the time of the appearance of Israel led by Joshua in Canaan (XIII century BC) and the time of the destruction of the cities of Canaan (archaeologically dated from the XV to the middle of the XII centuries BC) [6] .
