History

On November 22, 1983, an institute of military chaplainry was organized at the Catholic Church in South Korea for members of the South Korean army.

On July 21, 1986, Pope John Paul II issued the bull “Spirituali militum curae,” which established the military ordinate of South Korea. Since that time, the military ordinate of South Korea has become a separate independent church structure at the diocese.

Ordinaries of the military ordinate

  • Bishop Angelo Kim Nam Soo (11/22/1983 - 10/23/1989);
  • Bishop Augustino Jung Myung-jo (10/23/89 - 11/11/1998) - appointed Bishop-Coadjutor of Busan ;
  • Bishop Pedro Lee Guy Hong (10/29/1999 - 02/26/2010) - appointed Bishop of Yijonbu ;
  • Bishop Francisco Javier Yu Soo Il, OFM [1] (07.16.2010 - present).
