Biography
Ivan Dementiev was born on December 1, 1901 in the village of Sudbishchi (now Novoderevenkovsky District, Oryol Region ) into a peasant family. Received primary education, worked in the parent farm. He participated in the Civil War . Since 1923 he worked in his native village. In 1930 he moved to Tula . In September 1941, Dementyev was re-drafted into the army. Since December of that year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. He took part in the battles on the Western , 1st and 2nd Belorussian fronts. By July 1944, Senior Sergeant Ivan Dementyev commanded the guns of the 890th artillery regiment of the 330th Rifle Division of the 50th Army of the 2nd Belorussian Front. He distinguished himself during the Belarusian operation .
On July 8, 1944, during the battle near the village of Samokhvalovichi in the Minsk region of the Minsk region of the Belorussian SSR, Dementiev’s calculation helped the rifle units repel enemy counterattacks, suppressing several firing points and destroying a large group of enemy infantry. When the shells ran out, Dementiev’s crew continued to fight, firing from small arms and throwing grenades. In battle, Dementiev was injured, but did not leave the battlefield.
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 26, 1944, for "courage and heroism shown during the liberation of Belarus," Senior Sergeant Ivan Dementyev was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 5424.
Dementiev met the end of the war on the Elbe. In 1945, with the rank of foreman, he was demobilized. He lived in Tula, worked as the shop manager at the Tula combine plant. He died on October 15, 1964, was buried at the Tula cemetery.
He was also awarded the Order of the Red Star and a number of medals.
In honor of Dementiev named street in Tula.
