Biography
Andrei Dementyev was born on May 10, 1917 in the village of Dolgoe (now the Veidelevsky district of the Belgorod region ) into a peasant family. He graduated from seven classes of the school, after which he worked in Kursk as a blacksmith of the Transportnik artel, then became a teacher of physical education. In May 1938, Dementiev was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1939, he graduated from junior lieutenant courses. Since June 1941 - on the fronts of World War II. By April 1945, Major Andrei Dementyev commanded the division of the 279th guards light artillery regiment of the 23rd guards light artillery brigade of the 5th artillery division of the 4th artillery corps of the breakthrough of the 3rd shock army of the 1st Belorussian front . He distinguished himself during the assault on Berlin [1] .
In the period from April 16 to 28, 1945, Dementiev skillfully organized the fire of his division’s batteries, causing serious damage to the enemy in military equipment and manpower. At the critical moment of the battle, he advanced the guns of his division for direct fire and supported them with fire from the assault group of the 146th Infantry Division. When the enemy launched a counterattack against the division, his fighters beat me in hand-to-hand combat [1] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated May 15, 1946, Major Andrei Dementyev was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the awarding of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal [1] .
In 1949, Dementyev graduated from the Higher Officer Artillery School. In 1960, with the rank of colonel, he was transferred to the reserve. He lived in Kursk, worked as the director of the cinema, then the commandant of the Kursk Polytechnic Institute . He died on September 3, 1984, and was buried in Kursk [1] .
He was also awarded the Order of Alexander Nevsky and two Orders of the Red Star , along with a number of medals [1] .
