Biography

In 1298, Novodeta Podesta was appointed (he was in this position until 1299).

On June 24, 1300, he married Beatrice d'Este (1268–1334). In the same year, the Della Torre family, with the support of the Guelph party, expelled Visconti from Milan. Galeazzo found refuge in Ferrara at the court of d'Este . He lived there until 1311 and his children were born there.

In 1311, his father regained his power over Milan with the help of Emperor Henry VII . Galeazzo was appointed Signor of the city of Plesanche .

In June 1322, the 70-year-old Matteo I transferred the management of Milan to his eldest son. A month later he died, and Galeazzo I was elected captain of the people. In December, the People's Assembly was proclaimed Signor of Milan.

In 1327, the younger brother of Galeazzo I - Marco Visconti, podesta of Alexandria and Signor Lucca, accused him of treason to the Emperor Louis IV of Bavaria and switching to the side of the pope . The emperor removes Galeazzo I and puts him in prison with his brothers Giovanni and Luciano .

After his release in March 1328, he lived in Lucca at the court of Castruccio Castracani . He died the same year on August 6.

Children

From the marriage to Beatrice d'Este, Galeazzo I had two children:

  • Atzone Visconti (1302–1339), Signor of Milan from 1329,
  • Ricarda (1304-1371), from 1329 the wife of Tommaso II , Marquis of Saluzzo (1304-1357).
