Botanical Description
Plants upright, 15-45 cm tall, bare stems.
The rhizome is thick, rather short.
Leaves 3-4. Leaf blades from elliptical, 5-16.5 × 4-5.5 cm, almost glabrous, finely ciliated, pointed at the end.
Inflorescences are apical. The flowers are solitary, dark purple. Bracts are leaf-shaped, ovate-lanceolate, 9.5 × 2–2.5 cm. Pedicels and ovaries 3–3.5 cm, slightly hairy. A lip with a translucent “window” on the inside, deeply marsupial, elliptical, 3.5–4.2 × 2.5–2.8 cm, the inner lower part is covered with hairs.
Dorsal sepals elliptically ovate, 3.5-5 × 1.9-2.2 cm, pointed at apex.
The synsepalums are elliptical-lanceolate, 3.2-4.2 × 1.5-2 cm, at the apex shallow 2-lobed.
Petals are ovate-lanceolate, 4.4-5.2 × 0.8-0.9 cm, with very noticeable veins, pointed at the apex.
Staminodymium 1.3-1.5 × about 1 cm.
Flowering: June – July [3] .
Cypripedium tibeticum usually has more bluish-green leaves, which are relatively evenly distributed along the shoot, while Cyp. calcicola has yellowish-green leaves, which are usually located on a shorter shoot area. Both species may not have pubescence on the upper part of the stems of the stems, but may be more or less pubescent [4] .
In the western part of China, bumblebees were noted among pollinators: Bombus lepidus , Bombus lucorum, and Bombus hypnorum . It is assumed that bumblebees are attracted by a faint sweet fruity aroma ( ethyl acetate ) and a lip hole that simulates the entrance to the nest. It is noted that the uterus is more effective pollinators than workers.
Given that the flowers of Cypripedium flavum are pollinated by working bumblebees, and Cypripedium smithii and Cypripedium tibeticum by the uterus, researchers suggest that adaptation to pollination by insects with certain body sizes is the basis of reproductive isolation between Cypripedium tibeticum and Cypripedium flavum and increases the likelihood of natural interspecific hybridis smithii [5] .
Range
China Western Sichuan , Northwest Yunnan [3] .
Habitat
Forests, fields, shrubbery, on grassy slopes and rocky places. At altitudes from 2600 to 3900 meters above sea level [3] .
It can be found together with Cypripedium flavum , Cypripedium tibeticum and Cypripedium bardolphianum [4] .
In Culture
Complex and rare in culture.
Location: partial shade (at noon), morning and evening sun.
Soil mix: humus, sand, perlite (pumice) in a ratio of 1: 1: 1. The soil mixture should be loose. Plants should be provided with good drainage (20-30 cm of gravel or expanded clay), since the roots of Cyp. calcicola are sensitive to waterlogging and flooding in the winter-spring period. The depth of the landing hole filled with soil mixture is about 25 cm.
Blossoms in Germany in May – June [6] .
Zones of frost resistance : 3-5 [7] . In the conditions of Moscow and the Tver region ( Andreapolsky district ) it grows well but has not yet blossomed [8] .
