The first school was founded in 1862, in 1869, two years after the sale of Alaska , the post passed to the Alaska Commercial Company . On July 12, 1898, the first post office opened in Fort Yukon. For the first half of the 20th century, the settlement regularly suffered from epidemics and floods. On June 9, 1933, the future prominent politician Don Young was born in Fort Yukon. In the 1950s, the construction of a radar station and an air force base began in the village, so in 1959 it received the status of a city.
