Content
History
On December 22, 1910, Pope Pius X established the Apostolic Prefecture of Transvaal, separating it from the apostolic vicars of the Northern Transvaal (today - the Archdiocese of Johannesburg ). The pastoral care of the apostolic prefecture of Transvaal was entrusted to monks from the monastic order of the Benedictines .
On June 23, 1939, the Apostolic Prefecture of Transvaal was transformed into the territorial abbey of Petersburg.
On December 27, 1962, the territorial abbey of St. Petersburg transferred part of its territory for the construction of the new apostolic prefecture of Louis Trichardt (today the Diocese of Tzaneen ).
On December 15, 1988, the territorial abbey of Petersburg was transformed into the diocese of Petersburg.
On September 4, 2009, the Diocese of Petersburg was renamed the Diocese of Polokwane.
