History
On April 24, 1990, the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR (the highest authority in the republic) established the post of president of the Kazakh SSR by adopting the Law "On the establishment of the post of President of the Kazakh SSR and the introduction of amendments and additions to the constitution (fundamental law) of the Kazakh SSR" [2] . On the same day, the Supreme Council elected Nursultan Nazarbayev as president for a term of 6 years [3] .
On October 16, 1991, the Law "On the Election of the President of the Kazakh SSR" was adopted and the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR determined election day on December 1. The law established the need to collect 100 thousand signatures for the nomination and registration of a presidential candidate, which coincided with the requirements of the corresponding law of the RSFSR, although the population of the Kazakh SSR was several times smaller [4] .
On October 24, 1991, the current president of the Kazakh SSR, Nursultan Nazarbayev, was registered by the Central Election Commission as a presidential candidate.
Candidate for President of the Kazakh SSR N.A. was included in the ballot for secret ballot Nazarbayev and candidate for vice-president of the Kazakh SSR - E. M. Asanbaev [5] .
The deputies of the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR as a candidate for president also proposed a writer, Olzhas Suleimenov , but he recused himself. Khasen Kozha-Akhmet was unable to collect the required number of signatures for the election [6] .
Results
Nursultan Nazarbayev was elected with 98.0% of the vote, with 88.2% turnout. [7]

Inauguration
The inauguration took place on December 10, 1991. A few hours before the inauguration, the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR renamed the Kazakh SSR into the Republic of Kazakhstan. Thus, the elected president of the Kazakh SSR took the oath as president of the Republic of Kazakhstan [5] .
