The golden caterpillar , or the red-headed caterpillar [1] ( lat. Conopophaga aurita ), is a species of passerine bird from the caterpillar family (Conopophagidae) [2] . Its range covers the Amazon basin in northern Brazil , southern Colombia and the east of Peru and Ecuador , as well as Guyana , Suriname and French Guiana . Tropical moist low-lying forests are considered a natural habitat for birds. The species includes 2 taxa: Conopophaga snethlageae and Conopophaga pallida as subspecies . Due to differences in vocalization and morphology, Conopophaga snethlageae is sometimes considered a separate species, and Conopophaga pallida is a subspecies of Conopophaga snethlageae .
