Kurgancha - the fortress of Kurgancha is located 17 km east of the district center of the Republic of Karakalpakstan - the city of Takhtakupyr.

This monument is also known as “Kublandy kala”, because in folk traditions it is associated with the name of the epic hero Koblan. The fortress of Kurgancha is located in a desert area. From the north, east and west it is surrounded by a powerful sand massif, fixed by vegetation. Abandoned fields are adjacent to the monument from the south.

Kurgancha: Topographic plan and layout of the excavations

750-1000 m north of Kurganchi in the latitudinal direction passes the dry channel of the Karakul, which is perfectly pronounced in the relief, periodically flooded with waste waters.

Surroundings of the Kurgancha settlement. Legend: 1 - sand ridge; 2 - dry channels; 3 - placers of fragments of ceramics and the outputs of waving ash layers.

In 2000 m to the south there is another dry Kargabay channel, it also maintains a general latitudinal direction, but in relief it is less pronounced than the aforementioned Karakul channel. Both channels are part of the system of the now dried up eastern ducts of the Aral delta of the Amu Darya. As shown in 1960 and 2007. route surveys of the entire system of dry channels on the eastern edge of the Aral Sea delta of the Amu Darya, the above system includes numerous dry channels: Kamyshly-Kandym-Uzyak, Karakul and smaller channels connecting them - Kargabay, Sazsay, Lousan and others. All of these channels are densely overgrown with comb. , and in a number of places the comb comb stretches in a narrow strip marking a relatively recent water cut. The banks of the channels, as a rule, are steep, the channels are almost not scattered. All of them are part of the Kuvanyshdzharminsky system of the flow direction of the Aral Sea delta of the Amu Darya.

The total area of the settlement is about 18 hectares. The fortifications seem to us with a very interesting layout, since the general complex of the settlement develops gradually, changing its configuration in each individual period of existence. In history, the addition and development of the Kurgancha settlement was originally planned under a single construction system, but over time, this part of the settlement with a regular layout is fenced. As a result, the inner part of the settlement of a huge area remains undeveloped. Subsequently, the eastern part forms, and in the southern part an array of houses appears. But almost the entire regular part of the layout of the fortification, fenced by a rampart, perishes as a result of a big fire. Subsequently, this fire, Kurgancha loses the appearance of a single complex. The same fire was reflected in the eastern part of the settlement. All events related to fires and the entire construction history are recorded by long-term archaeological studies of the settlement of Kurgancha, which dates back to the 7th - first half of the 8th centuries. But the most important and interesting thing for us was the discovery to the south of Kurganchi, at a distance of about 1.5 km, the recorded remains of a huge un fortified early Cerner settlement with traces of light, probably temporary dwellings. Field educational archaeological practice at the Kurgancha monument was carried out in 2008, where trainees, under the guidance of archaeologists of the Department of History, achieved great results from excavations laid in the ancient settlement. A complex of ceramics, beads, and very characteristic for the 7th-8th centuries, was obtained. huge humi [1]
