Barrow (Moon Crater)

Barrow Crater ( lat. Barrow ) - an ancient impact crater in the northern circumpolar part of the visible side of the moon . The name is given in honor of the English mathematician , physicist and theologian , known by many scientists, the teacher Newton , Isaac Barrow (1630-1677) and approved by the International Astronomical Union in 1935. The formation of the crater dates back to the preectarian period [1]

Crater Description

The surroundings of Barrow Crater. Shot of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter probe.

The immediate neighbors of the crater are Goldschmidt Crater, adjacent to it in the northwest; Meton crater in the northeast and Bond W. crater in the southwest [2] . The selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater are , diameter - 94 km [3] , depth - 2.38 km [4] .

The crater shaft underwent severe destruction and multiple impacts , as a result of which it lost its integrity and turned into a ring of hills and peaks surrounding the crater bowl. The southwestern part of the shaft is blocked by the Barrow A satellite crater (see below). The eastern part of the shaft has a gap. The average height of the shaft above the surrounding area is 1400 m [5] , the volume of the crater is approximately 8000 km³ [5] . The northwestern part of the shaft has a maximum height. The bottom of the crater bowl is filled with lava and is dotted with many small craters. At the bottom of the crater bowl there are faint ray traces from the Anaxagoras crater.
