Physical Properties
Barium pyrophosphate forms crystals of several modifications [1] :
- α-Ba 2 P 2 O 7 , orthorhombic syngony , space group P nma , cell parameters a = 0.92842 nm , b = 0.56113 nm , c = 1.3796 nm , Z = 4 [2] , is formed when temperature ( hydrothermal synthesis );
- β-Ba 2 P 2 O 7 , formed at low temperature;
- δ-Ba 2 P 2 O 7 , formed during the dehydration of the crystalline hydrate.
Forms crystalline hydrate of the composition Ba 2 P 2 O 7 • 2.35 H 2 O [3] .
Application
- Titanium-activated barium pyrophosphate is used as a phosphor in fluorescent lamps emitting broadband blue light [1] .
