Biography
Jaan Jung was a simple county school teacher and amateur archaeologist.
In the second half of the 19th century, with the help of extensive correspondence, he initiated a wide campaign for the general inventory and cataloging of antiquities and antiquities in Estonia, and became the organizer of the movement of Estonians to find them in the country.
As a result of this, he was able to catalog nearly 500 monuments of Estonian history. The most important of these, Jung began publishing in Muinasaja teadus eestlaste maalt (the first list of monuments was published in 1898, 1899 and posthumously in 1910).
This was the first step in the development of Estonian archeology.
Collecting data on the famous stones of his land, in 1910 Jaan Jung's book “The Science of the Ancient Time of Estonian Land” was published posthumously, in which he described a number of monoliths discovered in Estonia.
Together with Matthias Johann Eisen (1857–1934) and Oscar Kallas (1868–1946), he initiated an event to collect folk music. Until today, the Estonian Folklore Archive in Tartu holds one of the world's largest collections of folklore.
Engaged in translations. He, for example, translated the Chronicle of Livonia , by Heinrich von Lettland , into his native language, describing historical events in Livonia and surrounding countries from 1180 to 1227.
Collaborated with many Estonian-language newspapers. He played the organ.
He was a member of the Scientist of the Estonian Society and the Finnish Society of Antiquities (Suomen Muinaismuisto-Yhtiö).
The works of Jaan Jung are now in the Estonian Museum of Literature.
He was buried in the Pilistvere cemetery.
