Career

Player

Hughes was born in the Edinburgh Lyte area in a simple working-class family [1] . He began to engage in football in the academy of the club "Newtong Star" [2] . Later he moved to Berwick Rangers , in which he made his debut in big football [3] . But a year later he left for Swansea City , which he also left after a year [3] . After five years he played for Falkirk , showing himself as a good central defender. At this time, twice became the champion of the First Division , and in 1993 won the Challenge Cup . These successes led to his transfer to Celtic in 1995 for £ 380,000 [1] . He did not succeed in being a member of the Celts for a long time, and a year later he moved to the capital of Scotland to play for a club from his home district, Hibernian [4] . In 1999, he helped the team win the First Division tournament and return to the Premier League . A year after that, he became an Air United player. [3] In 2002, being the team captain, she went to the Scottish League Cup final [5] . In “Falkirka” for two years, from 2003 to 2005, he combined the role of a player and head coach. During this time, with the team won the Challenge Cup and the double gold medals of the First Division.

Coach

In 2003, while still a Falkirk player, he became the head coach of the team, until 2005 he acted as the playing coach until he led the team to the Premier League in 2005 [4] . In December 2006, he was named coach of the month in ShPL . For four years he did not allow the team to leave the Premier League and in 2009 brought it to the Scottish Cup final [4] . In “Falkirka” he often condemned the actions of the arbitrators, for which in February 2008 he was serving a four-match suspension. As a result, in the off-season of 2009, he was invited to Hibernian [4] . But Hughes was unable to achieve success on Easter Road , and on October 4, 2010, after losing to St. Johnston 0: 2, he left the club, breaking the contract by mutual consent of the parties. In September 2009, he was named the coach of the month as a hibs coach. Two years later, in 2012, he headed “ Livingston ” [6] , but after nine months he left the Scottish club to take on the role of English coach Hartlepool [7] .
